Maxxima is currently seeking a experienced Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant to fill a full time role in London.
The starting pay rate for this locum BMS job is £10.00 to £11.00 per hour and is an ongoing role.
Requirements of the role:
All applicants must have a relevant experience of working within an NHS or Private Pathology Laboratory. Candidates must have a Valid Working Holiday Visa, Ancestry Visa or EU Citizenship.
1. Reception of specimens and their 'booking-in' on the computer.
2.The organisation and provision of a molecular diagnostic service for biopsy samples and blood. Including blood fractionation into components and DNA extraction.
3.The organisation and provision of training for other staff members as necessary.
4.Specimen evaluation and collection from theatres.
5.Maintaining chemical and equipment stocks.
6.Storage/ archiving of human tissue samples and derivative samples.
7.Participation in any lab rotas.
8.To take part in any other laboratory duties as and when the need arises.
10.To actively follow and promote UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities.
11.To maintain awareness of and comply with fire and health and safety regulations.
12.To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post.
Qualifications and Experience
*It is essential that applicants are State Registered Biomedical Scientists (Grade 1) or Research Technicians with a relevant first degree and at least 2-3 years experience in biochemistry/molecular biology.
Knowledge and Skills
*The post involves a considerable planning requirement as to work method: extreme care is required as to accuracy and dependability in record-keeping and archiving of human tissue samples and derivative preparations thereof. Applicants must be able to demonstrate this ability.
*The post holder must be able to liaise effectively with clinical and research staff to ensure the smooth collection of tissue samples from theatre.
*An initial training period will be provided during which working practices and techniques will be demonstrated in detail. Subsequently, it will be the post holder's responsibility to organise his/her own work programme, reporting to his/her immediate research supervisor.
*The ability to work flexible hours (occasionally into the early evening) is essential.
Biomedical Scientists / Technicians are encouraged to attend departmental and laboratory meetings, involve themselves in development and training and to use the excellent library facilities at UCL and the National Hospital.
